Seven AI book writers, by what each does best
The order is our preference for someone writing a novel or memoir of their own. It is an opinion, not a score, and our own app is first.

There are two very different jobs hiding under the same search. Some tools write the book for you: you describe it, they generate pages. Others help you write it yourself: they plan, suggest and edit, and you decide what stays. If you want a book that sounds like you, and one you can honestly call yours, you want the second kind. If you want to see a draft quickly so you can react to it, the first kind will get you there.
Squibler and NovelAI lean toward generating. Feldar and Novelcrafter lean toward helping. Sudowrite sits in between, with strong drafting tools inside an editor. Claude and ChatGPT are general assistants that live outside your manuscript.
The AI book writers, one by one
01Feldar Ours
Best for planning a book and writing it chapter by chapter, with AI you approve
Feldar is a writing app for novelists. Each chapter holds an Outline of scenes you can generate, edit and reorder, and Draft Page writes a chapter from those scenes at a word target you set. A Canvas beside the manuscript keeps characters, places, items, factions and plot beats as linked cards, and the AI reads them when it writes, so it remembers who is related to whom without being told again.
Nothing lands without your say. Continue from here writes at the cursor in blue and waits for Accept, Revise or Dismiss. Select a passage to tighten, deepen or add tension, and every change is marked before you apply it. Checks cover grammar, clarity, word choice, dialogue and point of view, and a private Writing record shows which words you typed and which came from Feldar.
The Library in Feldar. Each book gets a cover, and you pick up where you left off.
Good
Plan, outline, draft and revise in one place. Every AI change is shown before it stays. Six models: GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, and Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 (the free plan uses GPT-6 Luna). Feldar does not train AI models on your writing.
Watch out
No offline writing, no Windows desktop app yet (the web app runs in any modern browser) and no phone app. No ebook or print formatting. English only. AI features use credits.
Price
Starter free with 500 credits, no card. Core $20 a month or $180 a year. Pro $40 or $400. Ultra $200 or $2,220.
Runs on
Web and macOS. Imports and exports DOCX, PDF, Markdown and plain text.
Sudowrite is built for fiction, with tools that work directly on your draft: Write, Rewrite, Describe, Expand and Brainstorm, plus drafting from an outline. Its Story Bible holds characters and the outline as the AI's memory, and Series Folders carry that across books. It offers many models, including its own fiction models, Muse and Ballad.
Good
Models tuned for fiction. Strong drafting and expansion tools. Continuity across a series. iOS and Android apps. It says it does not train on your writing.
Watch out
Heavy drafting uses credits quickly. The pricing page defaults to yearly billing.
Price
Hobby and Student $10 a month billed yearly, or $19 monthly. Professional $22 and Max $44 a month billed yearly. Free trial.
Best for generating a whole first draft to react to
Squibler is an AI book and screenplay generator with an editor attached, and it advertises generating a full 200 to 300 page book. It is the most automated option here: good if you want a long draft to argue with, less good if you want the book to sound like you.
Good
A free plan with 500 AI credits a month. Unlimited AI credits on Pro. PDF and DOCX export on paid plans. Squibler says you keep ownership of what you create.
Watch out
Export needs a paid plan. A generated book is a long starting point to revise.
Price
Plus $29.99 a month, or $15.83 a month billed yearly. Pro $89.99 a month, or $49.17 a month billed yearly.
Best for choosing your own AI model and seeing every prompt
Novelcrafter keeps the writing app and the AI separate. You connect a model yourself, usually through OpenRouter, or run one on your own computer, and pay that provider for what you use. In return you see exactly what is sent, write your own prompts, and can keep any scene away from the AI. Its Codex is a deep story bible whose entries change as the story moves.
Good
Any model, including local ones. Full prompt transparency. A deep Codex. Revision history. Low subscription prices.
Watch out
The AI is a second bill from your provider, and connecting it takes some effort.
Price
Scribe $4 a month without AI. Hobbyist $8, Artisan $14 and Specialist $20 a month, with AI through your own provider. 21-day trial.
NovelAI treats the AI as a co-author: you write a few lines and it continues as far as you like. A Lorebook holds world details, and a text adventure mode turns a story into interactive fiction. It is a storytelling sandbox rather than a manuscript tool.
Good
Stories are encrypted and NovelAI says it cannot read them. Unlimited text generation from the cheapest plan.
Watch out
No chapters, outlines or book export. The largest context is on the top tier.
Price
Tablet $10, Scroll $15 and Opus $25 every 30 days. A free trial of 50 generations.
Anthropic's Claude is a general assistant, not a book tool, but it is a good partner for structural problems: why the middle drags, what a character really wants, whether a twist is earned. You paste passages in and carry ideas out yourself.
Good
Thoughtful on story problems. A free plan. Apps on desktop and mobile.
Watch out
No chapters, story bible or export. Consumer chats can be used for training if you allow it in settings.
Price
Free. Pro $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Max from $100 a month.
OpenAI's ChatGPT is the fastest way to get twenty title ideas or a summary of how a 1920s newspaper office worked. Like Claude, it sits outside your manuscript, so keeping a long book consistent is up to you.
Good
Broad knowledge, fast. A free plan and a low cost Go plan. Apps everywhere.
Watch out
No manuscript structure. On individual plans, conversations may be used for training unless you turn that off.
For writing a book of your own, we pick Feldar, which we make: it plans the book with you and every AI suggestion waits for your approval. For the fastest AI drafting, Sudowrite. For a complete generated draft to react to, Squibler.
Is there a free AI book writer?
Yes. The planner on our home page is free with no sign-up. Feldar has a free plan with 500 credits, Squibler has a free plan with 500 AI credits a month, and Claude and ChatGPT have free plans.
Can I publish a book written by AI?
Check the rules of wherever you publish. Some platforms ask you to disclose AI-generated content, and many contests and publishers do not accept it. A book you write yourself with AI help is on much safer ground, and a record of how you wrote it helps if anyone asks.
